Ground game is really just a new term for making sure the people you have previously identified as your supporters have voted. It's a more scientific way to go about GOTV.

I worked in the McGovern Senate campaign in 1968. We didn't call it "ground game" back then. We called what we did "canvassing" when we knocked on every door to ask a few brief questions to find out how a potential voter was leaning in a race, and what issues were important. Then we would call several times every identified McGovern supporter or leaner and everyone who was undecided or who had certain issue concerns. By election day we knew exactly who our supporters were and we made sure every one of them voted. If they needed to vote absentee we made sure that happened. We had poll watchers and callers and drivers, and we would make sure people got a ride to the polls if needed. Basically this is just Politics 101, but it sort of got lost for a few years when it was thought media buys would drive people to the polls.

As far as I'm concerned the media buys are a total waste. The high touch ground game is real politics.

There seemed to be a large set of polls today showing Obama stretching a lead out in the "swing states". It will be interesting if this storm, an odd occurance, pushed people one way or the other. Who knows; the polling models may be off. I know that I did vote already, just to not have to pay attention to this CF anymore. Didn't work

GOTV rally time in Madison, WI with Obama and The Boss on Monday meant to crank up the student vote. Milwaukee got Katy Perry. We get Springsteen. It's nice to be in a swing state. Unfortunately, I have a client during rally time so I'll be missing the event.

Mike: its a very mixed bag. Apparently, R and O are tied in Pennsylvania. If R wins Penn, he probably wins WH.

PA solid Dem: Obama-307, the white guy-231.

It's official: Willard/Ryan toast.
