It's the 11th hour and disaster is looming! We have got to raise the debt ceiling now! This was the position of the Democrats - until today. Now, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, that bastion of reasonability, is...filibustering his own bill. Recently, John McCain chided Republicans for trying to pass any bill that included a balanced budget amendment, because, he said, it had no chance of passing with the senate's current makeup. Now, Reid, apparently expecting his own bill to fail, is scrambling to prevent a vote on it, in spite of Senator Mitch McConnell's assurance that he would "be happy to have that vote tonight." It will be interesting to see how this latest move affects the polls.
As a side note: Just when I thought the debt ceiling debate couldn't get any sillier, John McCain introduced hobbits! And now I want to go to another Tea Party!
Byron York has a good piece on Harry Reid's voting record. If the Dems control the Senate he votes for raising the debt limit. If the Republicans control the Senate he votes no. Good thing we know that Republicans are playing politics with the economy.

The Tea Party people aren't, hobbits, they're Orcs.

I don't know! Some of us bake some mean pies.

Bill: you silly man. Hobbits and Orcs are distinguished primarily by what they eat for breakfast and second breakfast. I assure you, tea party people have no man flesh in either. Indeed, the very idea of tea is dispositive.

LOL. Welcome home, professor.

p.s. KB, I was under the impression that they disposed of Tea as opposed to consuming it, at least in the original incarnation. No? Not to mention penchants for BBQ pork, moose meat, sausages, etc, and their impulse to "drill baby drill."
Seems more Orc-ish than Elven to me, but I'm, as always, open to discussion.

Bill: now we are getting somewhere. Dumping tea into a cup is more civilized than dumping it into a harbor, but we aren't there yet. I will concede that there is nothing the least bit elven about the tea party. They are also a bit uppity for hobbits, but again, times have changed.
