I keep thinking that, at some point, the President's slide in the polls has got to bottom out. So far, however, the steady decline in his approval rating that began roughly a year ago continues. Perhaps the worst news is the recent Gallup Poll, which has the President's approval rating among independent voters at 38%. Good Heavens, he is down in George W. territory.
Of course in overall approval he is only three or four percent in the hole (about 49% disapproval to 45% approval). That's better than BP, I bet! Independent voters, however, at the voters who usually decide elections. That sort of disgruntlement usually weighs heavily in off year elections. It also seems likely that the President's overall numbers are buoyed by his near perfect approval among African American respondents.
Well, we have some idea of the Democrat's strategy in this moment of peril. They have launched a YouTube like site in the hopes of finding more "Macaca Moments".
It probably can't be considered a surprise that Democrats are on the lookout for the next "macaca" incident.
With George Allen's famous phrase in mind, the Democratic National Committee is starting up "The Accountability Project," a Web site that will showcase recordings of Republican candidates and other campaign documents collected by regular folks.
God bless regular folks. This of course means looking for gaffs. I am not sure there is anything dirty about this, but I wonder what my colleagues in the blogosphere who regularly decry character assassination, ad hominem attacks, and the politics of personal destruction will say about this. No, I know what they will say. Either nothing, or they will say it's okay because it's the Democrats doing it.
This is the kind of thing you do when your only hope is that the voters somehow forget who you are and what positions and actions you have taken.
