The latest Research 2000 poll commissioned by Daily Kos looks at how South Dakota Sen. John Thune fares against potential Democratic challengers in the 2010 election.

I've also appended the results below.
While no one has publicly challenged Thune as of yet, we pitted him against the Democrats' top two politicians in the state -- former Sen. Tom Daschle (who Thune ousted in 2004) and at-large Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin. The poll finds that Thune remains very popular in his state, with a 57/32 fav/unfav rating (+25). Herseth is +18 (53/31), and Daschle is only +7 (50/43).
In head-to-heads, Thune starts of the cycle above the all-important 50 percent mark, defeating Daschle 53-40, and Herseth-Sandlin 51-39. As of this time, Thune appears secure for reelection.

p.s. While Daily Kos is a progressive political community site, we use the independent Research 2000, like dozens of newspapers around the country, precisely to get an accurate and unbiased read on the races we poll. Daily Kos releases all the polls it commissions, including those that aren't favorable to its favorite candidates (like this one), and releases all the crosstabs to avoid cherry picking of data.
