An email from reader Roger on my post about Tom Brokaw's dissatisfaction with local rule:
Reading your article on Brokaw in today’s South Dakota Politics, I am reminded of his autobiography about growing up in South Dakota, “A Long Way From Home”. I will have to paraphrase as I don’t have the book here at work, but he said something to the effect of “I like having grown up in South Dakota, but I would not like to return to live.” That may be a telling phrase in his opinion of how the rural community should change to reflect his ideas of what life should be like. I grew up in Tyndall and only wait for my retirement from this eastern metropolis to return to South Dakota and the life with all institutions being closer to the people.
