On Monday the Senate Local Government committee will hold a hearing on SB 157, a bill to allow registered independents a vote in primary elections.
There are a lot of political sciencey reasons to oppose this bill, but one can sum it up by asking why those who aren't members of a political party should be allowed to vote in a primary election. The whole purpose of a primary is for parties to select their nominees. Why should a party decision be influenced by those who aren't even members? If an independent is so passionate about politics, he should join a party and influence it to better mirror his views. If he is unwilling to join a party, he should not help in making party decisions.
