A colleague of mine sent me this story, and asked whether it could possibly be true. Here is the meat of the "story" circulating on the net:
A spokesman for General James Cartwright, the Vice Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff, states that the Obama Administration wants to
have soldiers and officers pledge a loyalty oath directly to the office
of the President, and no longer to the Constitution.
I replied that I was sure this was false. Well, I was right. It's an internet lie. It certainly didn't pass the smell test. Even if you believe that Barack Obama has designs on our liberties, you'd have to wonder whether such a ham-handed device would advance them.
We have live through sixteen years of President hatred: right wingers spinning conspiracy theories against Bill Clinton, and lefties comparing George W. to Hitler. Can't we take a break? Barack Obama may be a good President or not. He ain't Big Brother.
