Kevin Woster has the goods at the Rapid City Journal. The piece includes many quotes from my favorite political scientist, me.
Dennis Daugaard is certainly the front runner for the Republican nomination for governor. A lot would have to go wrong for him to fail in that first step to the Governor's mansion. The closest thing he has to a credible challenger is Dave Knudson, who is associated with moderate Republicanism. This is not the kind of Republicanism that wins primaries. If someone is going to challenge Daugaard it must be someone who can be a credible conservative critic of the Rounds administration. Lee Schoenbeck could play this role, but like Calvin Coolidge and Jerry Seinfeld, he chose not to run.
Daugaard faces the same problem sitting vice-presidents face, namely separating yourself from your boss and becoming your "own man." The potential problem for Daugaard is that people see him as simply a third Rounds term and it turns out they are sick of Mike Rounds.
