Much to the disappointment of many, Lee Schoenbeck will not run for governor in 2010.
To the best friends anybody could ask for:
> I appreciate the encouragement and support all of you have given us with respect to running for Governor in 2010, but after a lot of consideration I have decided not to run. I left the legislature because I had young kids at home, and while they are getting less young all the time, for a few more years it is clear to my where my heart is on this one.
> If you’re one of the thirty-some people from around the state that was coming to the meeting in Sioux Falls , I imagine this will catch most of you by surprise. When we set the meeting up three weeks ago we were gung ho to go. My family has been 100% behind it. Had it not been for a couple of folks with scheduling snags that caused us to postpone the meeting – we would be campaigning today. But fate has a way of catching up. When we postponed the meeting, it gave me a chance to look one more time and all the things I would have to be gone for – and when I took that inventory of events around home that might each seem insignificant individually – collectively it was too high of a price to pay. Funny thing about parenting – you can’t just phone in it – you need to be there.
> The lucky thing about being comfortable in your own skin is you don’t have to have any regrets about the decisions you make in life. I will have none. You shouldn’t either. Good candidates will emerge – they always do.
> The state has some serious challenges to address that will take strong leadership, like energy development, economic development, transportation infrastructure, an affordable higher education strategy that is tied to retaining talent in the state, appreciating the role of technical education in work force development, rewriting the k-12 funding formula, real property taxation, and the list goes on. I would have relished the opportunity to get up every morning and attack these issues – to see what we could do make our state better for all the families that live her – and I am confidant that a new Governor will do that. Maybe in a future legislature I will have the opportunity to help again.
> For now, I am lucky enough to get to do the same thing this mechanic’s kid’s parents did. Enjoying the challenges of raising four kids here at home, with the gift of a wife that I have loved deeply for 21 years. We really enjoy raising our family here in Watertown and moving was never an option (I would have had plenty of time to work as Governor – as during the week I would have been living a part from my family – in pretty good government housing I might add).
> As always, the coffee, pop or adult refreshments are always available at our place and we love company. I have a couple of really good friends running for Constitutional offices in 2010 and I look forward to helping them. With another child college-bound next year, imagine we will be working even harder to cover all of those costs (in the near future where we will have 3 or 4 in post-high school education – who planned that deal !
> Have a very Merry Christmas – you are the best bunch of friends a guy could ask fo
