Peter Wallison gives a coherent and thorough explanation of the various government policies that led to our current financial predicament.  I shall post the video below.  It is about 25 minutes, which will keep many readers from bothering, but I highly encourage you to take the time.  I think Wallison lets the average citizen off the hook for his greed, but nonetheless Wallison is correct to point out that to a large extent people were acting on incentives created by government policy.  Here's the video.
