I endorse Jason's comments: Congratulations Mr. President elect. McCain was gracious. Obama deserved to win.
All things considered, it wasn't nearly as bad for the Republicans as they might have feared. Obama will win a majority of the popular vote, but the difference is only about 5%, apparently. It is not true, as some liberal commentators kept saying, that Republican support collapsed or that "Reganism" is dead. Bear in mind that Obama promised to deliver tax cuts to 95% of the American people. Maybe he didn't really mean tax cuts, but the fact that he used Republican language is significant.
On the other hand, McCain lost a lot of states that the Republicans used to be able to count on. That is an ominous sign for the GOP.
On the Senate side of the equation, the Coleman/Franken race is still too close to call as I type. I had hoped and still hope that Coleman pulls it out. On the plus side, Stevens seems to be winning in Alaska. This is good not because Stevens wins, but because he will probably be expelled by the Senate. Then Palin can appoint a successor. That might keep that seat for the GOP. If Coleman wins, the Democratic gains will be held to six, or even five. Oregan is still too close to call. I had predicted a loss of seven seats.
