Jonah Goldberg: "Look, I expect to be one of the most severe critics of the Obama administration and the Democrats generally in the years ahead (though I sincerely hope I won't find that necessary). But Obama ran a brilliant race and he should be congratulated for it. . . . God bless America, and may He guide Obama to be the best president possible."
Mr. President-elect, I congratulate you on your campaign. It is truly a historic night having our first African American president and a testament to where this nation has come in the last thirty years. While, like Goldberg, I expect I'll disagree with some of your policies, I will do so with the respect that the Office of the President deserves. I urge my fellow conservatives to do the same and to not fall into the derangement that has characterized segments of the Left over the past eight years. I hope that I'm wrong about some of my criticism of Obama, and we'll see how things shake out for the next four years. He ran a brilliant campaign and should be congratulated for his achievement. I wish you the best of luck.
Mr. McCain, I may disagree with some policies and the course of your campaign, but you have run an honorable and tough campaign. Thank you for your service and commitment to the United States. Although you were not on the top of my list of candidates I supported, I've appreciated your integrity. Just listening to McCain's gracious concession speech is proof enough that he is a man of character and would have admirably served as the nation's Commander in Chief. I'll quote McCain to end: "I wish godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president. . . . do not despair of our difficulties but to always believe in the promise of America."
UPDATE: Jim Geraghty writes: "I have many, many disagreements with Barack Obama. But tonight I congratulate him on his victory. I have seen a few critics say, "he won't be my president," but that is nonsense. He will be my president, and I will wish him well, particularly as he takes on the duty of protecting the American people in a dangerous world." Indeed.
