Unfortunately, only the less credible of the two headlines is true. Or at least the call from the Rays' dugout hasn't gotten through so far.
Powerline, my second favorite blog, is stunned. I am too. After my role model, Todd Epp, I try to adopt a generally Zen attitude toward elections: just to be alive is enough, be intimate with whatever arises. But I have to admit: I care about the Minnesota Senate race. It's not that I don't like Al Franken. I have enjoyed his comic work for years. It's just that he is a pompous ass whose life is dedicated to the proposition that everyone he disagrees with is an idiot. And it's not that I favor Norm Coleman over Franken, it's just that Coleman is a genuine public servant who has behaved responsibly throughout his career, while Franken is a porn-mouthed tax evader and hate monger. So now that I have that straight…
The Star Tribune, for which august publication my daughter wrote some front page stories, has endorsed Coleman. Apocalypse at Eleven. Says John Hinderaker:
Normally the Star Tribune finds one or two Republicans to endorse in each election cycle. Their usual practice is to choose Republicans who either can't lose, or can't win. For that paper to endorse a Republican in a major, hotly contested race is unprecedented in my memory. I'm speechless.
A recent poll has Coleman comfortably ahead. I am holding my breath. A Franken victory would be a deep embarrassment to American democracy. Nothing other than celebrity and cash makes Franken a viable candidate. Even the Star Tribune can see that.
