The "town hall" meeting at NSU today on the future of our region here in the Northeast part of the state went well. Lots of ideas were discussed. It remains to be seen if anything comes of it. It was noted that precious few elected officials were present. One thing that was made clear is that this part of the state is in demographic decline (not news) and that all the communities must work together to meet the housing, transportation, and job needs of the area.
A participant from the South Dakota Department of Labor stated that there is a new federal tax credit available for employers in counties with declining population. When they hire a new worker between the ages of 18 and 39, they can get a healthy tax break. Employers in rural counties should contact the Department of Labor to see if their county qualifies and whatever added restrictions there are on the credit.
