Powerline has the story. Former Durham County DA Michael Nifong, whose resignation I commented on earlier, has been disbarred by the North Carolina bar. It is altogether proper that Nifong lose his law license and his office. I am inclined to think that he ought to be prosecuted and serve time, if that is possible under the law. Nifong set out to deliberately railroad several young men. He did so originally to secure an election victory and later, I think, to cover up his own misconduct. He clearly attempted to circumvent the most basic rights of the accused in keeping DNA evidence from the defense. If he had been successful, he would have sent innocent persons to prison. For that, he deserves a spell in the slammer himself.
Powerline also reminds us of the role that 88 Duke University professors played in the travesty. Before the facts had come out and without the benefit of a trial, the 88 issued wanted posters of the lacrosse players. Erasmus would have recognized these robe and tassel scoundrels.
