Todd Epp at SDWatch nails his proposal to the door. Representative Herseth-Sandlin should run for the State House in South Dakota. Todd makes a good case, and I would emphasize the point that it would be very good for the South Dakota Democratic Party if they could elect a Governor. Herseth-Sandlin would be a strong contender. Nor is this the first time I have heard this suggestion. I gather that her family here abouts would like to see it, just as I would like to see my daughter return from far off parts and settle in God's own Aberdeen. I would also like to see high-speed, vacuum-tube trains linking Aberdeen to Paris.
I think Herseth-Sandlin is about as likely as Tom Daschle to repatriate. The House seat was her ticket out. And besides, right now Tim Johnson's Senate seat is glowing like a chunk of Kryptonite in Clark Kent's luggage. If, as I continue to expect, Tim does not run again, H-S will surely be drafted to run for it. Suppose, under those circumstances, that H-S did decide to run for governor. The state house has always been a hard nut for Democrats to crack. If she loses, Republicans could well end up in control of South Dakota's entire congressional delegation and the cool office in Pierre. I can't see the Democrats taking that risk.
