Professor Schaff and I have been down in the Big Easy attending the Southern Political Science Association. At night, we have been free to roam around, and we have taken in some classic jazz. Friday night we saw the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. It consisted of a drummer, piano and bass players, and four trombones. It was a marvelous show. I had no idea what a Trombone was for. Now I know. The songs were, of course, old jazz standards. Their version of St. James Infirmary was extraordinarily moving.
On Saturday night we stopped in at the Maison Bourbon, also dedicated to jazz preservation. We listened to two sets of Jamil Sharif and his quintet. The jazz was more modern, closer to the bebop style I usually listen to. It was very good. Schaff picked up one of their CDs. Here is a shot of the band.
