My kids came through this Christmas, as usual. My son gave me Wayne Shorter's Juju. His older sister gave me Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers A Night in Tunisia, which also features Shorter on tenor sax, and Jason's hero Lee Morgan on trumpet.
Both CDs are wonderful, but Juju ranks as one of the best jazz disks I have ever heard. Shorter is often given credit as the "idea man" behind the Miles Davis Quintet, which is a lot to be given credit for. His genius as a composer is on display in every number on Juju. McCoy Tyner plays piano; Reggie Workman, base; and Elvin Jones is on drums.
