Glenn Reynolds posts a positive review of Mark Steyn's America Alone. I read this book on the plane to Idaho over Christmas and was quite disappointed. While Steyn is a right-wing nut job and thus strokes all of my prejudices, I found the book's arguments thin and poorly evidenced. Steyn has lots of numbers on demographics (and never tires of telling us demographics is destiny), but he does not present them in a logical fashion that builds toward a grand conclusion. Instead, and this is true of the whole book, conclusions and supporting arguments are intermingled, making the overall argument muddled. I guess this is what happens when a columnist tries to turn his columns into books: some interesting points here and there, but a lot of repetition and a lack of rigor. Buy it when it comes out in paperback, but the hardcover is not worth it.
