The Argus Leader reports that Senator Johnson's medical condition is thankfully beginning to improve:
A doctor for Sen. Tim Johnson today said the senator is gradually being weaned off medication that has kept him sedated since brain surgery Dec. 13.
“Senator Johnson’s overall general medical condition has improved and he is gradually being weaned from the sedation,” Dr. Vivek Deshmukh, a neurosurgeon at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, said Thursday. “He is opening his eyes and is responsive to his wife.”
Johnson is in critical but stable condition recovering from arteriovenous malformation, a condition that causes arteries and veins to grow abnormally large and sometimes burst. He had bleeding in his brain Dec. 13 and underwent emergency surgery that day.
Johnson’s 60th birthday is today. Spokeswoman Julianne Fisher said the Johnson family has gathered at the hospital to mark the occasion at the senator’s bedside.
“They had planned a party for him, but it’s been postponed,” Fisher said. “He’s responding to (his wife, Barbara) and the tests are encouraging.”
