PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Railroad Board voted unanimously Wednesday to urge approval of a $2.3 billion federal loan for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad's expansion plan that would haul coal from Wyoming to power plants in the Midwest.
South Dakota's congressional delegation, Gov. Mike Rounds and a number of business leaders supported the DM&E project at a meeting with a federal official Tuesday in Huron. Members of the state board said they also back the federal loan because the DM&E project would improve rail service, boost the economy and provide jobs.
"This is probably South Dakota's last best chance to have world-class rail service," board member Dan Baker of Rapid City said.
