Matt Drudge is good at hyping stories. But sometimes his headlines are little more than blatant distortions. Take his current top story. By the time you click the link it may be gone, but it reads "Church Damns Da Vinci." "How interesting," you say, " some church, probably the Catholic Church, is saying seeing or reading the Da Vinci Code is a sin." Then you click the link. Well, it's the Greek Orthodox Church for starters. Second, the Orthodox Church is merely stating facts, namely that Dan Brown's story is riddled with historical falsehoods. So then why are they "damning Da Vinci." They aren't. Here's how the article concludes.
The Orthodox church, to which 97 percent of Greeks belong, "does not call on people either to see or not to see the film, or to read or not to read the book ... but it is sure that those who do will see the lies and reject its riduculous content."
Seems as though the only thing damnable is Drudge's headline.
By the way, Amy Welborn has some nice resources on The Da Vinci Code. Truth in advertising: I have not read this book, nor do I plan on it. Why? Not for any religious or philosophical reasons. I just have very little interest in contemporary fiction.
