Today, Germany is celebrating Nikolaus, in which children place their shoes (Nikolaus-Stiefel) outside their doors on the night of December 5-6. Sankt Nikolaus (St. Nicholas) comes around and fills the boots with gifts and checks up on the children to see if they were good. If not, they recieve charcoal in their shoes instead. Sankt Nikolaus is accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, who acts as an ominous counterbalance to punishes children that have been bad.
If you'd like to celebrate Nikolaus today, go out and enjoy some Milka.
