Last week, Denise Ross transcribed an interview with Thune campaign manager Dick Wadhams. This week, she has a transcript of an interview with Daschle campaign manager Steve Hildebrand headlined "Growing up poor led to politics." Excerpt:
Ross: How much can you talk about your strategy for the remaining two months? What's your No. 1 priority?Hildebrand: Make sure the truth is told about Tom's record for this state. We go directly to the voters. We have an aggressive paid media campaign just like John does, but we are better at going and having conversations with people at the door or casual conversations with voters over the phone that are engaging conversations, not intimidating conversations. We believe if voters understand Tom's record and can sift through some of the crap that's going to be thrown at Tom from the other side, we will win this race.
Ross: Is there anything else you'd like to say?
Hildebrand: This race is a defining race for this state. If they choose Tom Daschle, they will choose based on what they believe is best for South Dakota. If they choose John Thune, they will make a choice based on wedge issues that distract from what is best for this state.
